Data, Licensing & Attribution

GeaSpirit combines material it creates itself with datasets published by other organisations. Those are not the same thing and are not licensed the same way. This page sets out which is which.

GeaSpirit original public content

Unless otherwise indicated, original public GeaSpirit editorial and methodological content is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0).

This covers only original public content in which GeaSpirit actually holds the relevant rights — our explanatory writing, our published methodology, our glossary, and diagrams and tables we produced ourselves. It does not license third-party datasets, source imagery, external quotations, basemaps with their own terms, our private analytical outputs, our software, or any material compiled under terms incompatible with it.

Third-party data

Third-party datasets remain subject to their respective source licences, terms and attribution requirements. A GeaSpirit display, normalisation, transformation or integration of third-party material does not imply ownership of the underlying source data.

Where permitted, we transform, normalise, deduplicate and integrate third-party data, and we take care to say so. What we own in that case is the transformation layer, not the source. Our licence notice does not relicense anyone else's work: rights in the underlying material stay with whoever holds them, together with every obligation attached, including attribution and share-alike terms where they apply.

Private intelligence

GeaSpirit's private analytical models, scores, target coordinates, internal evidence systems, non-public datasets and proprietary intelligence are not included in the public licence and remain proprietary. The public site deliberately carries coarser representations of some of this work — a band rather than a score, a region rather than a target.

No endorsement

No endorsement is implied by any data provider.

Use of a dataset does not imply sponsorship, verification or endorsement of GeaSpirit or its interpretations by the source provider. A provider naming a fact does not make that provider responsible for what we concluded from it, and displaying a source does not give GeaSpirit any official standing with it.

Data quality

GeaSpirit integrates datasets from many providers with different coverage, update frequency, precision, licences and methodologies. Those differences do not disappear when the data is drawn on one map. Where a source records that a location is approximate, we keep it approximate; where a dataset does not cover a region, the blank space means the dataset is silent, not that the ground is empty.

Sources

Significant third-party sources used on the public site are listed with their provider, licence, source link and required attribution in the rights manifest linked above. Where a source's terms are unclear to us, we record that as unresolved rather than assume permission, and treat the material as not redistributable until it is settled.

This page describes how GeaSpirit manages rights and attribution across its public surfaces. It is a publication-control framework, not legal advice, and it does not constitute a warranty of compliance. If you hold rights in material shown here and something is wrong, tell us and we will correct or remove it.
